A snippet reproduction rule binding public and private bodies.

Instrument type
an act of a legislature

What it requires

  • You may, without authorization, reproduce in a newspaper or periodical, or broadcast or communicate to the public, an article from a newspaper or periodical on a current economic, political or religious topic, or a broadcast work of the same character, unless the right is expressly reserved on the copies or in connection with the broadcast (s. 13).
  • You may reproduce and broadcast or otherwise communicate to the public short excerpts of a work seen or heard in the course of current events, to report those events, to the extent justified by that purpose (s. 13).
  • Indicate the source and the author, as far as practicable, for both uses.
  • Do not treat these exceptions as covering routine reproduction of headlines or extracts outside a current-events or informatory purpose.

Research summary

Legal information, not legal advice. This is LexLint's own research summary of a public legal source, and it creates no attorney-client relationship. For decisions that matter, consult qualified counsel in the relevant jurisdiction. About LexLint

Without the author's or copyright owner's authorization, and subject to indicating the source and author as far as practicable, a person may reproduce in a newspaper or periodical, or broadcast or otherwise communicate to the public, an article published in a newspaper or periodical on a current economic, political, or religious topic, or a broadcast work of the same character, except where the right to authorise that reproduction, broadcasting, or communication is expressly reserved on the copies or in connection with the broadcast.

Separately, for the purpose of reporting current events, a person may reproduce and broadcast or otherwise communicate to the public short excerpts of a work seen or heard in the course of those events, to the extent justified by the purpose. Neither provision creates a blanket exception for an aggregator's routine reproduction of headlines or extracts outside a current-events or informatory purpose. No National Gazette notice bringing the Act into operation has been located.
