What this law does
Article 6(c) excludes the news of ongoing events that is merely press news from the protection the Act otherwise grants, so such a news item is never a protected work under Sudanese copyright law. Article 27 lets excerpts be taken from a work that has been lawfully published and included in another work, for the purpose of clarification, explanation or critique, within the customary limit the purpose justifies and consistent with fair use, on condition the source and author's name are cited.
Article 28 lets the public be given, or a person reproduce, articles published in newspapers and periodicals on current economic, political or religious discussions, or broadcast works of the same character, by newspaper, broadcast or wire transmission to the public, in cases where the right to reproduce or transmit has not been expressly reserved, with the source clearly indicated.
Article 30 lets a work that is seen or heard during current events be reproduced or broadcast as part of preparing a news report on those events, within the limit the informational purpose sought justifies. The text of the Act states no day on which it comes into force, and no Gazette notice or commencement order for it has been located.
