What this law does
Section 12 of the law adds a temporary section 2A2 to the Elections (Propaganda Methods) Law, 5719-1959, for the period that begins one week after the law's publication and ends one year after election day for the Twenty-Sixth Knesset. A person who publishes election propaganda that appears deeply real, a deep fake, must attach a disclosure stating clearly and prominently that its content was not originally recorded.
The Chair of the Central Elections Committee may set rules on meeting the disclosure duty. The section does not apply to election propaganda first published before the day it takes effect. The law defines a digital means to include artificial intelligence. The definition of a deep fake reaches an event, a document or another object that may appear to have been recorded originally but was created by digital means, or edited by them so as to change it materially. The Knesset passed the law on . It was published in Sefer HaChukim 3546 on .
