What this law does
Under paragraph 1 of article 68, in calls for the purchase of books, including for supplying or updating the collections of libraries at every level and kind of education and of public libraries, the public authorities must adopt clauses that bar the participation of publishers that do not also offer their production in accessible formats.
Paragraph 2 treats as accessible formats the digital files that screen-reading software, or other assistive technologies that may replace it, can recognize and access, allowing reading with a synthesized voice, enlargement of characters, different contrasts and printing in Braille. The opening provision of article 68 requires the public authorities to adopt mechanisms that encourage the production, publishing, dissemination, distribution and sale of books in accessible formats. The Act enters into force 180 days after its official publication.
